GUWAHATI: The Gauhati High Court on Monday ordered the Assam Public Service Commission (APSC) for conducting the Combined Competitive Examination (Mains), 2020 without language papers. The court was hearing petitions related to the qualifying language paper in the Assam Civil Services Examination.
However, the APSC has been directed not to make the final selection of candidates without the permission of the court. “The court has directed the APSC to conduct the examination without the language paper. High Court heard a public interest litigation filed by Siddhartha Sarma and three writ petitions filed separately Navin Kumar Ray, Bonani Priya Rajkonwar and Bondita Bora.
Earlier in December last year, the court had passed two consecutive orders in this matter. On December 10 last year, the court was hearing writ petitions challenging the APSC CCE rules, which made the qualifying language paper mandatory in some districts. It directed the commission to conduct the CCE (Mains) Examination, 2020 without language paper.
A week later, the court heard a PIL by Sarma challenging the state government’s decision and sought a direction to the responding authorities to strictly adhere to the Assam Official Language Act, 1960. It asked the commission not to conduct the examination without the permission of the court.
