Protest in Tripura against attack on Buddhist monastery in Bangladesh

Members of five tribal organizations from Tripura protested in front of the Bangladesh Assistant High Commission here on Monday and condemned the attack and setting ablaze the Katkhali Forest Buddhist Monastery under Teknaf in the neighboring country’s Cox’s Bazar district.

A joint statement by five tribal organizations said on Monday that at least eight indigenous people, including women belonging to the Chakma community, were injured during the October 24 attack.

These organizations submitted a memorandum to Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina through Assistant High Commissioner Mohammad Jobaid Hossein.

The memorandum said the attack on the Katkhali Forest Buddhist monastery follows a series of incidents of attacks on Hindu temples, Durga Puja pandals and Hindu minorities since October 13, indicating that the Bangladesh government has taken no action. Measures to ensure the security of religious minorities in the country.

“This is because the Bangladesh government has failed to punish those who destroyed 19 Buddhist temples and about 100 houses in Chittagong’s Ramu, Cox’s Bazar and Patiya in 2012,” the memorandum said.

These organizations said in their statement: “The Government of Bangladesh has a responsibility to protect the life, property and right of religious minorities to practice their religion.”

Tribal organizations demanded that the perpetrators of the attack on the Katkhali Forest Buddhist monastery and at least eight indigenous individuals of the Chakma community be brought to justice and those who destroyed 19 Buddhist temples and nearly 100 houses in Ramu, Cox Of. Chittagong’s Bazar and Patiya through fast track court in 2012.

Tribal organizations protesting on Monday include Chakma National Council of India, Chakma Buddhist Welfare Society, Young Chakma Association, Tripura Chakma Students’ Association and Tripura Rejyo Chakma Gabuchy Joda.
