A day after nationwide protests over now-suspended BJP leader Nupur Sharma’s remarks on the Prophet, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said “hate and unrest is not our way”.

The Congress leader said: “Bapu’s ideals are the foundation of independent India. Our country has always set an example of truth, non-violence and brotherhood before the world.”

Heavy protests erupted in many parts of the country over the remarks made by suspended BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma after Friday prayers. A total of 237 people were arrested from different districts of Uttar Pradesh till Saturday evening in connection with Friday’s violence. Two people also lost their lives in Ranchi in connection with the protests.

Thousands of people pelted stones at police personnel during protests after Friday prayers in Prayagraj and Saharanpur. At least five other cities witnessed similar scenes during the march, which was done to stop the objectionable remarks made on Prophet Mohammad by the now suspended BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma. Fresh tension was witnessed in West Bengal’s Howrah district when protesters clashed with security personnel. The personnel had to use tear gas shells to pacify the protesters.
