Prophet Row: CCTV footage shows Ranchi Police running for cover from stone-pelting mob

Of the 22 injured in the Ranchi protests, 10 are policemen and others are protesters.

Ranchi:

26 people have been charged for violence in Jharkhand’s Ranchi over the recently suspended BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma’s remarks on Prophet Muhammad and Islam. Two people were killed and over 20 were injured during the protests on Friday.

CCTV footage of the protest shows the police running from cover as the mob throws stones at them. In the video, a cop can also be seen holding his head after getting injured during the protest. The mob also threw utensils and plates at the police.

The protesters are demanding the arrest of Nupur Sharma and expelled BJP leader Naveen Jindal for their controversial remarks on Prophet Muhammad.

Of the 22 injured in the Ranchi protests, 10 are policemen and others are protesters. Three of the injured are in critical condition.

Ranchi Police has registered nine FIRs and is probing the matter. The police on Friday registered a case against 26 named and 10,000 unidentified persons for taking out a procession and attacking the police.

Jharkhand Police spokesperson and Operation IG Amol V Homkar said, “The police team is probing the matter. We have detained several people for questioning. The matter is being investigated.”

Curfew has been imposed in many parts of the Jharkhand capital during the violence. Over 2,500 police personnel have also been deployed around Ranchi to maintain peace.
