Prophet Row: 72-year-old man arrested for organizing Jama Masjid protest

New Delhi: A 72-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly disrupting communal harmony and organizing protests without permission at Jama Masjid area here recently against controversial remarks on Prophet Mohammad. The police gave this information on Wednesday. Police said that accused Anwaruddin, a resident of Matia Mahal in Jama Masjid area, has been booked under section 41A of CrPC (police can arrest without warrant). A senior police officer said that Anwaruddin, who runs a motor shop in the area, has earlier been involved in 10 criminal cases, including three cases related to the riots.

Police said he is accused of forcing shopkeepers to close shops in support of protests after Friday prayers at Jama Masjid on June 10, police said. According to the police, preliminary investigation has revealed that people were mobilized through messages on WhatsApp groups.

Protests started outside Jama Masjid on 10 June Along with hundreds of people are demanding the arrest of now sacked BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma and former Delhi BJP media wing chief Naveen Jindal.

Protesters gathered at the popular mosque held placards for their remarks on the prophet and raised slogans against the two.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) Shweta Chauhan had said, “An FIR was registered against the protesters at Jama Masjid police station on June 10 under section 188 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Jama Protests were held in the mosque area after Friday prayers without permission. Section 153A of the IPC has also been added (in the FIR) to promote communal enmity in the area. A day after the protest, the police raided Jama Masjid. Mohammad Nadeem Zaid (45), a resident of the area, and Mohammad Faheem Khan (37), a resident of Turkman Gate area, were arrested.
