Prisons Department’s proposal for five new jails in Maharashtra. Pune News – Times of India

PUNE: The state prison department has submitted a proposal for five more jails in Mumbai, Palghar, Pune. hingoli and to decongest the Gondia jails. It also includes a multi floor jail in Mumbai (near Chembur).
“In the last 10 years, the population in state prisons has increased from 24,000 to 36,000. The collective capacity of all the jails in the state is 24,000,” said Sunil Remaining, Additional Director General of Police (Prisons) on Tuesday.
“The population of 36,000 excludes prisoners released on bail or special parole to decongest prisons in view of the spread of COVID-19 infection. We have released 13,115 prisoners from various jails so far.”
“We also aim to start an open prison colony for women prisoners on similar lines” Atpadi Jail in Sangli,” he said.
“The state government has given us 25 acres of land in Palghar to build a jail, while 10 acres near Chembur for a jail in Mumbai. We have 42 acres of land in Hingoli. intend to build a prison on us yerwada On a public-private partnership (PPP) basis, and we have received a land parcel in Gondia,” he said.
“Arthur Road Jail has a capacity of 800 inmates, but it has double the number of prisoners. We will create a facility for 5,000 prisoners at a location near Chembur. This prison will be constructed on the lines of Miami Jail of America. It will be a prison for undertrials,” he said.
“The second Yerwada jail will have a capacity of 2,500 prisoners,” he said.
