Varanasi: Unruly scenes were created in the Varanasi district jail after the death of a prisoner due to cardiac arrest on Friday morning. As his fellow inmates went on a rampage resulting in utter chaos inside the jail, a heavy police force entered the jail and brought the situation under control.
Giving this information, commissioner of police A Satish Ganesh said that prisoners involved in provoking others were being identified. “On the complaint of prison officials, an FIR would be lodged against the rioting prisoners,” he added.
According to district jail superintendent, Arun Saxenaan accused in a case of fraud, Rajesh Jaiswal of Sigra area, had been arrested by the Chetganj police in September and since then he was lodged in barrack-3 of the district jail. “On Thursday evening, he had suffered chest pain and prison guards hastened him to the jail hospital and later took him to the SPG divisional hospital. After treatment his condition improved and he was brought back to the jail in the night,” he said.
“However, when the prisoners from the barracks were coming out for the morning counting process, Rajesh’s condition deteriorated again and he was hastened to the SPG divisional hospital but he died on the way,” he added.
Saxena further said that when the news reached the jail, the prisoners were having breakfast. “Taking advantage of the situation, around 15 prisoners provoked others alleging that laxity by jail officials claimed the life of Jaiswal,” he added.
After it, the prisoners went on a rampage and raised slogans against the jail authorities and indulged in brick batting. They also damaged the jail ambulance and other articles and misbehaved and assaulted the prison guards. Jail authorities then alerted the commissionerate police.
