The dates for the 16th presidential election in the country have been announced, out of the last 15 presidential elections, Neelam Sanjeev Reddy was elected unopposed in only the seventh presidential election held in 1977, apart from voting in all the remaining 14 elections. A total of 37 candidates were nominated for this election, but on the last day of withdrawal, on July 21, 36 candidates withdrew their nominations and at 3 pm Neelam Sanjeev Reddy was declared the President.

Neelam Reddy also participated in the fifth presidential election, when she got 3,13,548 votes while VV Giri emerged victorious for the top post by securing 4,01,515 votes in that election. At that time the Vice-President VV Giri was the independent candidate while Reddy joined the Congress as an official candidate. In the first and second elections, Dr. Rajendra Prasad was elected President, in these elections, five and three candidates had contested respectively.

In the third election, there were two more candidates in front of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. In the fourth election held in 1967, there was a contest between 17 candidates. This was the highest number of candidates in the presidential election, out of which 9 candidates got zero votes, while Dr. Zakir Hussain was elected president. The sudden death of Zakir Hussain led to the fifth presidential election in 1969.

In this election, VV Giri was elected President out of a total of 15 candidates. Hariram Choudhary was a candidate in the first five presidential elections, he is the only candidate who took the highest number of presidential elections. Apart from these, Krishna Kumar Chatterjee has also participated in the presidential elections thrice and has contested the elections.

Then from the eighth and 11th to the 15th elections, every time there was a contest between two candidates. Till then every time there was a contest between only two candidates. In the 11th election, KR Narayanan got 9,56,290 votes, the highest ever. TN Seshan got only 50,631 votes in comparison to him. In the 12th election, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam got 9,22,884 votes.
