Presidency directs DGP rank officer to investigate missing prisoner case

Old photos are not available even when the camera is on. This was stated by the Presidency Reform Authority in the investigation report of the prisoner’s disappearance on the orders of the court. Dissatisfied with the report submitted on the same day, the court directed the state’s advocate general to conduct an inquiry into the incident, headed by a DGP-rank officer.

Presenting a report in the court on the same day, the Presidency Correctional Authority said that though the CCTV camera was operational on the day of the incident, its footage could not be collected from the hard disk due to some unknown reason. Even the advice of an experienced technician did not work. Expressing dissatisfaction with the report, a division bench of Justice TS Sivajapan and Justice Hiranmoy Banerjee asked, “Why his movement cannot be seen in the CCTV footage?” It is not even mentioned in the jail documents?’

The court said that all the documents of the case should be handed over to the Advocate General. He will hand over the investigation of the incident to a DGP rank officer. The report has to be submitted to the court by February 11.

On December 21, a man named Ranjit Bhowmik, accused of selling distilled liquor, disappeared from the Presidency Jail. The court had granted him bail that day. The next morning, family members came to pick him up and learned that he had been let off the night before. Since then Ranjit Babar has not been traced.
