Wolverhampton Wanderers kept their hopes of snatching a European spot for next season alive after an excellent volley from Johnny and their own goal from Ashley Young in a 2-1 Premier League win over Aston Villa on Saturday.

Wolves move up to seventh, one point ahead of West Ham United, but have a game in favor of David Moyes.

“Huge win, I thought we were excellent from start to finish,” Wolves captain Conor Cody said. “We controlled the ball, used it well when in possession. Defensively, we tried to stop the ball from coming in from the middle and forced it to go wide.

Villa was caught out in the seventh minute when midfielder John McGuin handed the ball over the halfway line, resulting in a sharp break by Johnny with a clever volley in the top corner.

Half an hour later, the hosts got their second goal, albeit with a piece of luck, when wing-back Fernando Marcel’s cross bounced off substitute Young and netted Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez.

The visitors dominated their possession after the break and saw Wolves down in their own half for an extended period, but Villa were disappointed with the wayward finishing.

Forward Ollie Watkins wasted a few gilt-edge opportunities before winning a penalty when he was bowled in the box by Wolves goalkeeper Jose Sa.

Watkins stepped up and calmly scored from the spot to score a consolation goal in the 86th minute, but by then it was too little, too late.

Villa, now unable to win their last three league games, finished ninth on 36 points and manager Steven Gerrard was not happy with his players.

“Again, I leave disappointed because the boys have only given us 45 minutes of performance,” he told reporters. “The boys come in for a walk in the second half and feel like they’re in a derby game. I’m really disappointed with my first half performance.”
