Mason Greenwood held Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side to a 1-1 draw in Southampton on Sunday as Manchester United equaled the top-flight’s longest unbeaten record.

These sides also met for the first time in almost 18 months in front of a full St Mary’s crowd, as Ralph Hasenhuttl’s men scored nine goals without an answer at Old Trafford in February.

There were no further humiliations on Sunday as the Saints put up a promising performance when a Chee Adams strike struck Fred before Greenwood secured a draw and secured United’s place in the history books.

Solskjaer’s side went the entire previous season without losing a league game on the road and this result on the south coast led the league unbeaten to 27 matches, leveling it with Arsenal in 2003–04.

The Saints threatened to stop that race on Sunday and went ahead at halftime, standing firmly during a strong start by the visitors before ending a fine team move with a strike from the edge of the box by Adams, which Fred went out.

United should have been in front earlier and somehow failed to score in seven minutes.

Harry Maguire and Paul Pogba pressed on to reach Bruno Fernandes’ set-piece before Mohamed Salisu blocked the Anthony Martial-led follow-up and cleared impressive teenager Tino Livramento.

Greenwood pulled away and Salisu blocked Pogba’s strike as the visitors continued to persevere, with the French midfielder then heading for a free kick from Luke Shaw.

But the home team took the lead in the 30th minute. Fernandes was furious, realizing he had been fouled on the right by Jacques Stephens, which left the Portuguese in a ditch and continued to circle near Moussa Gennepo. The winger’s first ball was cleverly caught by Adam Armstrong, who took a couple of touches and hit home through a deflection off Fred from 20 yards.

Fernandes was booked for his opposition with officials after the goal and the Saints threatened a second, with Livramento breaking his right to over-hit only a cross.

United leveled 55th when Pogba hit Fernandes towards Greenwood, whose shot struck Alex McCarthy and found the back of the net in front of a raucous traveling support.

Jadon Sancho replaced Anthony Martial and Pogba was soon teasing Southampton’s defence, hitting a left footed shot just in front of goal.

Greenwood climbs to the top of the net and McCarthy produces an unconventional save to negate Fernandes’ header.

By that time David de Gea had little precious to do but came to the rescue in the 73rd. James Ward-Prause takes the ball to Maguire, and Adams hits a shot through Armstrong to score the goal.

Southampton finished the match on top to earn a qualifying point.
