Pregnant and lactating women in high risk group amid third COVID-19 wave

The World Health Organization has already expressed its concern over the rising number of COVID-19 cases globally due to the Omicron variant. In a statement recently published by the organization, Dr. Hans Henri P. Kluge, WHO’s regional director for Europe, urged vulnerable groups to be vigilant and vaccinate for primary and booster doses. Further, he asked people to avoid visiting crowded places to limit the spread of the virus.

The vulnerable groups he mentioned in his statement include the elderly, people with existing health conditions, children below the age of 18, and pregnant and lactating women. While the elderly and others have come forward in large numbers for vaccination, pregnant and lactating women are still skeptical.

Vidhi Dhingra, senior clinical dietitian said, “It is advised by WHO to go for COVID vaccination if you are pregnant or lactating. Pregnant women experience a mix of emotions and adjustments in their lives which can be heightened especially during the COVID-19 restrictions. It is important to get vaccinated to reduce the fear of contracting the infection and to remove at least one concern from the list, albeit with continued covid with proper precautions. ,

The Union Health Ministry is also at the forefront of advising pregnant and lactating women to get vaccinated as it will not only protect them but also boost the immunity of their child. In a document published by the ministry, she has answered the frequently asked questions dispelling the myths and confusions related to the COVID-19 vaccination to women.

The third wave of COVID-19 also poses a new risk for unvaccinated pregnant and lactating women. Last week, Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan Hospital (LNJP) MD Dr Suresh Kumar told ANI, “In the last few days, 20 COVID-19 infected pregnant women were admitted to LNJP. They had very mild symptoms but none of them were from Omicron.”

Now, as the country is in the grip of a third wave of the pandemic, the population at risk needs additional protection.
