‘PM Modi will face the same fate as Sri Lankan President’: Trinamool MLA Idris Ali

Amidst the ongoing crisis in Sri Lanka, Trinamool Congress MLA Idris Ali said that the Prime Minister Narendra Modi Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa will face the same fate.

The MLA made a statement after the Chief Minister of West Bengal on Sunday Mamata Banerjee was not invited to the inauguration ceremony of Sealdah metro station in Kolkata. Condemning the act, he said it was an injustice not to invite Banerjee as the project was initiated by him when he served as the railway minister.

Sealdah, a major station on the East-West Metro Corridor, will be inaugurated on July 11 for which Union Minister Smriti Irani has been invited, an official said here on Saturday. Metro Railway spokesperson Eklavya Chakraborty said commercial services between Salt Lake and Sector V in Sealdah would start from July 14.

Another reason for TMC’s anger was that no state government dignitaries were invited to the inaugural function. Earlier in a similar incident, Mamata Banerjee was kept out of an official program at Victoria Memorial presided over by Home Minister Amit Shah.

Sri Lanka crisis

On Saturday, thousands of protesters attacked the residence of Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa in the capital Colombo.
This comes after months of protests over the country’s economic crisis.

The island nation of 22 million people is grappling with its worst economic crisis since its independence in 1948, triggered by the confluence of the Covid-19 pandemic with a tourism-dependent economy, rising oil prices and populist tax cuts by the government Is. Gotabaya will resign as President on 13 July while Ranil Wickremesinghe stepped down as Prime Minister of Sri Lanka on Saturday 10 July.
