Heavy rain, be alert; 3-day holiday for educational institutions: Telangana CM KCR

In the wake of heavy rain in Telangana and the Meteorological Department’s warning of heavy rains in some districts of the state till July 13, Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao on Sunday directed all departments to remain on high alert and take steps to prevent loss of life and property.

Rao reviewed the situation, the measures taken so far and the measures to be taken while declaring a three-day holiday in educational institutions from July 11 in view of the heavy rains. He took stock of the situation in a high-level meeting with ministers, chief secretary Somesh Kumar and other senior officials. The meeting was held at Pragati Bhavan, Rao’s official residence complex-cum-camp office.

Rao, popularly known as KCR, directed the officials to open the control room at the state secretariat and monitor the situation closely, an official release said.

Put up warning boards near work-ways, he told officials and urged the public to avoid agitations. He directed that people should be displaced from old and dilapidated buildings. He asked the public representatives to be stationed at their respective places to oversee the relief work. Rao said that two people were killed in a wall collapse incident in Andhra Pradesh’s Nalgonda district on July 8 and Rs 3 lakh each would be given to their families as ex-gratia.

Earlier in the day, the Chief Secretary took stock of the situation by video conferencing with the collectors of the districts. He instructed the collectors to work in coordination with all the departments and ensure that no untoward incident takes place.

Another official release said that the Chief Secretary said that collectors should remain on high alert and take steps to prevent loss of life and property or damage to any property. He also directed the collectors to set up a control room in the collectorate. Irrigation, Panchayat Raj, Municipal Administration and Energy Department should ensure that no problem arises.

The Chief Secretary said that Asifabad, Nirmal, Nizamabad, Peddapalli, Sirisila, Bhupalpally and Mulugu districts have received heavy rains. He said that since the tanks, ponds and reservoirs are in spate, the authorities should be on high alert and see that sand bags are kept ready in case the weak tanks break.

People living in low-lying areas can be shifted to special camps if necessary. He said that the roads should be repaired immediately if they are damaged. Special Chief Secretary-Energy Sunil Sharma, Special Chief Secretary, Urban Administration and Urban Development Department Arvind Kumar and other officers participated in the video conference.

The weather center said in its forecast that there is a possibility of heavy to very heavy rains at isolated places in Adilabad, Komaram Bheem Asifabad, Mancherial, Nirmal, Nizamabad, Jagityal, Peddapalli, Jaishankar Bhupalpally districts till 8.30 am on Monday.

Similarly, heavy to very heavy rain is very likely to occur at isolated places over Adilabad, Komaram Bheem Asifabad, Mancherial, Nirmal, Nizamabad, Jagityal, Jaishankar Bhupalpally districts from 8.30 am on July 11 to 8.30 am on July 12. said in the bulletin issued today.
