Prime Minister Narendra Modi will chair the UN Security Council’s high-level open debate on “Enhancing Maritime Security: A Case for International Cooperation” via video conferencing on Monday, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) informed on Sunday.

Several heads of state and government from member states of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) and high-level briefers from the United Nations system and major regional organizations are expected to attend the meeting, his office said on Sunday.

The Prime Minister’s Office said, “Modi will be the first Indian prime minister to preside over an open debate of the United Nations Security Council.”

The open debate will focus on ways to effectively combat maritime crime and insecurity and strengthen coordination in the maritime domain.

The PMO said the UN Security Council discussed and passed resolutions on various aspects of maritime security and maritime crime.

However, this will be the first time that such a high-level open debate will discuss maritime security holistically as a special agenda item.

“Given that no country alone can address the diverse aspects of maritime security, it is important to consider the subject holistically at the United Nations Security Council. A comprehensive approach to maritime security can be taken to counter traditional maritime activities. While protecting and supporting lawful maritime activities and non-traditional threats in the maritime domain,” it said.

The oceans have played an important role in India’s history since the time of the Indus Valley Civilization, it said, adding that based on the country’s civilizational ethos, which see the ocean as the enabler of shared peace and prosperity, Modi said this The approach was put forward. SAGAR – an acronym for “Security and Development for All in the Region” in 2015.

This approach focuses on cooperative measures for sustainable use of the oceans, and provides a framework for a safe, secure and stable maritime sector in the region.

In 2019, at the East Asia Summit, the initiative was further expanded through the Indo-Pacific Ocean Initiative (IPOI) with a focus on the Seven Pillars of Maritime Security, including marine ecology; marine resources; Capacity building and resource sharing; Disaster Risk Reduction and Management; science, technology and academic cooperation; and trade links and maritime transport, it said.
