Prime minister Narendra Modi On Sunday, the 150th birth anniversary of freedom fighter VO Chidambaranar was lauded for his contribution while the Tamil Nadu government celebrated the day as a state event with Chief Minister MK Stalin and leaders across party lines honoring the state symbol of the freedom movement. Social Welfare Minister P Geeta Jeevan, along with party MP Kanimozhi, declared a main road in Tuticorin renamed after the VOC as open and also laid a wreath at the leader’s statue in the southern port city. Fisheries Minister Anita Radhakrishnan visited the VOC’s memorial at Ottapidaram in southern Tamil Nadu and paid floral tributes.
Telangana Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan was among others who visited the freedom fighter’s memorial at Ottapidaram and paid tribute. Attending an event to honor the leader, Sundararajan paid tribute to him and underlined his contribution to India’s independence movement, including the Swadeshi Steam Navigation Company initiative.
BJP Tamil Nadu unit chief K Annamalai, who paid floral tributes at VOC Manimandapam in Tuticorin, tweeted, “VO Chidambaram Pillai was born on September 5, 1872 at Ottapidaram, Thoothukudi, popularly known as VOC, Freedom fighters of the highest order.”
Annamalai said that VOC was a renowned lawyer and writer during the days of his life. “He gave up everything at once and started the Swadeshi Steam Company, a shipping company to take over the British monopoly in shipping. Unite our workers against the unfair trade practices of the British. The British government arrested him and forced him to do ruthless labor in the Coimbatore jail. They sacrificed everything for our freedom and our country.”
Dravida Kazhagam chief K Veeramani garlanded the statue of VOC in Tiruchirappalli. To honor the VOC, Stalin on Friday announced a 14-point program that included the refurbishment of his monuments and the establishment of an award in the leader’s name in recognition of his contributions – by working in various fields including shipping – in the freedom movement.
