Pitru Paksha Shradh 2021: The 16-day Hindu ritual of Pitru Paksha celebrated in Hinduism to pay homage to the soul of the departed will end on 6 October.

The 16-day Hindu ritual of Pitru Paksha, which is observed to pay homage to the soul of the departed, will end on October 6. Pitru Paksha is considered as a mourning period which includes many worship, rituals and charity activities. . It is also believed that paying homage to those who died during Pitru Paksha helps them to attain Mukti or Moksha.

The period of Pitru Paksha begins on the full moon and ends on the new moon during the month of Bhadrapada which falls between August and September. On Wednesday, 6th October, this month will end with Sarva Pitru Amavasya.

Importance

Amavasya Tithi Shradh is performed for those family members who died on Amavasya Tithi, Poornima Tithi and Chaturdashi Tithi. This day is also important for those Hindu devotees who could not perform Shradh on any other date. Sarva Pitru Amavasya Tithi can also be considered as a single Shradh for all the dead in the family.

This day is enough to appease all the dead souls in the family, if the death anniversary of the ancestors is not known or has been forgotten. All Shradhs can be performed by Hindu devotees on this same date for family members. This is the reason why Amavasya Shradh is also considered as Sarva Pitru Moksha Amavasya in Hindu rituals.

Mahalaya Shradh for those who die on Purnima Tithi is also performed on Amavasya Shraddha Tithi and not on Bhadrapada Purnima. Bhadrapada Purnima Shradh falls a day before Pitru Paksha but it is not considered a part of Pitru Paksha. Pitru Paksha Bhadrapada Purnima starts from the next day of Shradh.

On this day, family members worship the deceased family member and prepare their favorite food items which are later given to the poor or fed to birds or cows.
