Pinarayi Vijayan to be ‘crown’ in CPI(M) meeting

In Kerala’s Kannur – Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan’s home ground – the stage is set for the CPI-M’s 23rd Party Congress, an event held every three years, where the party puts forth its agenda and with He chooses a new leadership to lead his way.

The mega meeting will start on Wednesday and end on Sunday. General Secretary Sitaram Yechury is set to get a third and final term, but the focus will be on 76-year-old Pinarayi Vijayan. He is likely to reach a new level to become the undisputed and last word in the party, not only in Kerala but also at the national level.

And how he got there, is the work he did when he became the state party secretary in 1998 after quitting as a cabinet minister in the EK Nayanar government. In 2015, he had literally taken over the party and all those leaders whom he thought would cause trouble were gradually thrown out.

But his stock soared after taking over as chief minister in 2016, following his party’s resounding victory in the assembly elections for a second term in April 2021, despite being surrounded by several allegations.

Yechury had then said, “Have you seen this happen in your lifetime, when the CPI(M) government came to power in Kerala.”

Yechury’s statement was very clear, that the party has everything with Vijayan, as he has been wiped out in Bengal, where he ruled for more than three decades and is struggling in Tripura and it was not a second term, here Lal The party was in disrepair.

A media critic on condition of anonymity said there is no doubt that it is Vijayan who decides everything in the CPI(M) today and till now there has been no grumbling against him.

“More than half of the 800-plus delegates who attend the party Congress are from Kerala and hence, Vijayan will be the one to call the shots and all eyes are on the powerful central committee and the structure of the party’s politburo. Don’t be surprised if there are more women in the central committee and perhaps in the politburo and the only question is how many of them will be from Kerala and most likely, this is where Vijayan’s word will be final,” the critic said.

Vijayan has been staying in Kannur for the last two days and is ensuring that everything is done for the resounding success of the party Congress.
