Petrol, diesel prices fall after excise duty cut; Check fuel rates in your city today

Fuel prices remain unchanged for more than a month as of Thursday 23 June. Oil marketing companies have kept retail price of petrol And diesel has been stable since May 21. Last month, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced a cut in excise duty petrol 8 per liter and diesel at the rate of Rs 6 per liter.

Petrol price in Delhi on Thursday is Rs 96.72 per liter from Rs 105.41 per liter earlier; While the retail price of diesel in the national capital is Rs 89.62 per liter as against Rs 96.67 per liter earlier. Petrol consumers in Mumbai will have to pay Rs 111.35 per liter, while diesel consumers in the financial capital will have to pay Rs 97.28 per litre. Petrol in Kolkata costs Rs 106.03 per liter, while in the capital West Bengal, diesel costs Rs 92.7 per litre. The retail price of petrol in Chennai on Thursday is Rs 102.63 per liter, while the retail price of diesel is Rs 94.24 per litre.

Petrol and diesel prices in the country are revised by public sector OMCs such as Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL), Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL). The change in the prices of petrol and diesel is applicable from 6 am daily. The revision in the fuel price depends on several factors including international crude oil prices and foreign exchange rates. Due to local factors like state taxes, VAT (Value Added Tax), freight charges, the price of petrol and diesel also varies across states.

Following the move of the central government where there were significant cuts in excise duty to bring down fuel prices, several state governments also reduced VAT on petrol and diesel. The Maharashtra state government reduced the local VAT on petrol by Rs 2.08 per liter and on diesel by Rs 1.44 per liter. The state government of Odisha announced a rebate of Rs 2.23 and Rs 1.36 per liter respectively in local taxes on petrol and diesel. The state government of Rajasthan reduced VAT on petrol by Rs 2.48 per liter and on diesel by Rs 1.16 per liter. Meanwhile, the Kerala state government announced a reduction in local tax on petrol and diesel prices by Rs 2.41 and Rs 1.36 per liter respectively.
