Perfume Trader Peeyush Jainlikely To Walk Out Of Jail Today | Kanpur News – Times of India

Kanpur: Kannauj perfume trader Peeyush Kumar Jain, from whose house Rs 196 crore had been seized some months ago, will be released from Kanpur district jail likely on Thursday after the jail authorities refused to release him on Wednesday following an error in his release memo.
According to special public prosecutor Ambarish Tandon, the release memo had mentioned the arresting police station as Kakadeo instead of DGGI, Ahmedabad. “Due to this technical error, the jail authorities refused to receive the release memo and asked the messenger to get it corrected,” he said.
The Allahabad high court had granted bail to Peeyush and in compliance, the court of special chief judicial magistrate ordered a release memo on Wednesday morning.
While granting bail, the high court had directed to furnish two sureties of Rs 10 lakh each and a personal bond of the like amount. Peeyush’s wife Kanta Jain and son Priyansh Jain submitted two sureties in the shape of two FD receipts of Rs 10 lakh each.
The court of special chief judicial magistrate, which is handling the trial, then sent the sureties for bank verification. The bank officials verified the FDs and the report was received by the court on Tuesday and it was expected that Peeyush would walk out of the Kanpur jail after around eight and a half months on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, the special prosecutor further stated, Peeyush was produced in the virtual court on Wednesday morning and the presiding judicial officer extended his judicial custody till September 21.
However, later the court of the special chief judicial magistrate ordered his release and sent his release memo to the jail. The court also fixed September 21 as the next date of hearing and asked Peeyush to appear in person on that day in the court.
Peeyush is facing two cases. One is regarding gold recovery in which the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence, Lucknow Unit is prosecuting him under the Customs Act for recovery of more than 23 kg gold bars having foreign marking. The second is the recovery of Rs 196 crore in which the DGGI, Ahmedabad Zonal Unit is prosecuting him under the CGST Act.
The DGGI, Ahmedabad had raided the perfume trader’s Anandpuri house in Kanpur on December 23, 2021 and later his Kannauj residence. The raid continued for four days and the team had recovered over Rs 196 crore, 23 kg gold and 600 liter sandal oil from his houses. The department had arrested him on December 27 and he has been in jail since then.
