Coimbatore: The municipal corporation’s target of 100% vaccination of eligible population in all its wards may not be achieved soon, as some people are still reluctant to get vaccinated.
Sai Nagar near Kurichi is one such area where 80 people are not ready to laugh. Health officials have so far not been successful in persuading them to get vaccinated.
A municipal health official said they were about to end the vaccination drive in some wards where only a few people are left to look into it. “A survey is underway to identify vaccinated and unvaccinated people in each ward, which has been divided into smaller segments on the basis of population density for this purpose. Ward 95 (Kurichi) has 20 to 30 unvaccinated people in each area, while 80 people in Sai Nagar are yet to be vaccinated.
Sai Nagar resident S Srikala said that he was not aware of the area wise survey and its results. “Many people in my area have taken the vaccine. There was a vaccination camp in our area on Monday and many people took advantage of the opportunity to get vaccinated. However, they (officials) cannot force anyone to take the vaccine and it is entirely an individual’s discretion.
The official said that they are taking all possible measures to get them vaccinated. “Recently, a special camp was organized exclusively for them, but the response was not encouraging. Some of them said they were looking forward to foreign vaccines made by Pfizer. All are highly educated people. We are trying to convince them to take a vaccine which is currently available in the country.”
He said that even the residents of nine streets in NP Itteri were not ready to put a stop to it. “It is a slum area. We had organized 15 vaccination camps there and the response was weak. Of the 2,500 eligible population here, 502 are yet to be vaccinated.
Another official said residents are cooperating with him in most of the wards. “We have vaccinated all the eligible population in Ward 11 (Saibaba Colony). We are very close to achieving the target in Ward 23 (a part of RS Puram) and 24 (a part of Gandhipuram).”
