Mumbai: Number of Covid-19 cases detected Maharashtra After hitting a 17-month low on Monday, it rose slightly.
On Tuesday, the state counted 2,069 cases and 43 fatalities since the arrival of the novel coronavirus in March last year, taking the total caseload to 65.8 lakh and the death toll to 1.4 lakh.
Cases in Mumbai hovered around 400 for the second day in a row, mainly due to more than 35,000 tests being conducted below normal. On Tuesday, the city reported 418 cases and two deaths, taking the total caseload to nearly 7.5 lakh and the death toll to 16,164.
BMC officials said that though the Mumbai region has again become the largest contributor to the state’s tally, the Pune region has recorded more Covid cases than Mumbai- there is no cause for concern as of now. “We cannot deny that the cases have increased compared to the period when there were strict restrictions. Additional municipal commissioner Suresh Kakani said the impact of the August 15 decision – Mumbaikars who completed 14 days after being fully vaccinated to board local trains – is evident on the city’s Covid tally.
BMC’s acting health officer Dr Mangala Gomre said areas where the cases have marginally increased compared to the previous weeks are being studied. “Fight-North (Matunga), D (Malabar Hill), E (Byculla), HW (Bandra) and A (Colaba) wards are being closely monitored but the increase in cases is by no means huge, ” He said.
Meanwhile, the active cases in the state came down to 30,525, but it rose to 5,985 in the city. Health department officials said it was clear that the second wave was subsiding, but there was a possibility that the cases could rise again after the festive season.
