Patiala: A 36-year-old man allegedly stabbed his sister’s three-and-a-half-year-old daughter with a snowflake around 25 to 30 times on Saturday, police said after arresting her for murder.
accused is Pankaj Kumar Bansal, resident of Tejbagh Colony, Patiala City. Sources said that he was unmarried. He was fired from the government job after working as a sub-divisional officer in Punjab State Power Corporation Limited for nearly five years. According to family members, the accused was in depression for the past few months and was behaving abnormally.
The incident took place around 11.30 am when the accused took a girl named Mahira Gupta to another room on the pretext of playing together.
SP (city) Harpal Singh said, “The girl was playing alone in her maternal grandparents’ room. Her grandmother was in the kitchen. girl’s mother, Nishi Gupta, had gone with her father Krishan Kumar To take medicines for him as he was recently discharged from the hospital after suffering a heart ailment.”
“Pankaj was unhappy with his frequent visits to his sister’s house. He took the girl to another room, closed the door and hit her in the stomach with an ice pick about 25-30 times. He had probably closed the child’s mouth,” the SP said. Police said that the girl’s mother was married to a professor of a private college in Kapurthala.
During this, the girl’s mother returned and tried to find the daughter. When he found the room locked, he called his mother and neighbors for help. When he opened the door, he found a girl covered in blood. The accused fled but was soon arrested.
