Patiala: A middle-aged man has been arrested for sacrilege Gurudwara Sahib of a village in Nabha Patiala District on Saturday.
The CCTV footage of the incident has gone viral on social media.
Police have identified the accused as 45-year-old Jagdeep Singh, a resident of Dittupur Jattan village in Patiala. He had allegedly entered the premises of his village Gurdwara Sahib to offer prayers on Saturday, but later, in the presence of staff members and granthi (who prays), the accused tried to desecrate by removing Rumala Sahib (kept to cover the cloth) Sri Guru Granth Sahib)
Staff members present at the Gurdwara Sahib claimed that immediately after the staff arrived, the accused picked up the sword kept near the Sri Guru Granth Sahib and tried to grab it.
Members of the Sikh community were also angry as the accused failed to cover their heads with a piece of cloth despite the presence of Sri Guru Granth Sahib.
Police said that the accused was mentally disturbed as well as being a cancer patient. Police claimed that he was undergoing treatment for cancer in Ludhiana.
“The accused was caught by the village staff” Gurudwara Sahib. Police station in-charge Sukhdev Singh said that on the complaint of a member of the Village Gurdwara Samiti, a case has been registered against him under sections 295A and 380 of the Indian Penal Code.
He said the accused would be produced in the court and his police remand would be sought for interrogation.
