BHUBANESWAR: Campaigning through digital platforms, including social media, is a first for candidates and political parties in the upcoming panchayat elections, in view of the rise in COVID-19 cases.

The ruling BJD has already developed a well-organized cadre base at the panchayat level to conduct its social media activities.
“We have appointed a social media coordinator from our students and youth wing in each panchayat. They have been trained to run positive campaigns and use social media platforms to counter the opposition. Such coordinators will be key players in the election campaign,” said the student wing president of the BJD Devi Ranjan Tripathi,
The party has formed WhatsApp groups where videos and messages of state governments’ schemes are being sent regularly.
The party is also planning to set up a center here to directly connect with social media coordinators during elections. The BJP also plans to open a control room at its state headquarters to coordinate the digital campaign in various districts.
