Parliament Winter Session: AAP, TMC Make Surprise Attendance At Cong-led Strategy Meet Of ‘Like-Minded’ Opposition Parties

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Wednesday called a meeting of opposition parties in Parliament to chalk out a joint strategy for the winter session of Parliament. Apart from the usual attendees, the meeting included two unexpected participants – the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Trinamool Congress.

The presence of AAP and TMC came as a surprise at Kharge’s meeting as both the parties had long refused to conform to Congress-led moves in Parliament.

Both the parties skipped the Congress-led meeting of the Leaders of the Opposition House on November 29 to arrive at a consensus on the issues to be taken up in the winter session.

AAP and TMC also skipped similar meetings during the monsoon session in July.

Apart from AAP and TMC, the Left parties, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), NC and RSP were represented in the meeting called before the start of the session.

Kharge, who is the Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, had called a meeting of “like-minded opposition parties” to discuss a joint strategy for the winter session, which begins today.

In this session of Parliament, the opposition is seeking to corner the government on several issues, including price rise, and unemployment, and is demanding a discussion on the border security situation in the wake of “intrusions” and alleged misuse of agencies by China. government.

“Parliament is the house of democratic deliberation. We, like-minded parties, will strongly take up all issues relevant to our people. PM @narendramodi ji, you said the opposition is getting more chances to participate, so we expect the government to walk its talk,” Kharge tweeted.

“If laws are made in haste, they attract judicial scrutiny. Therefore, we expect that all important Bills should be referred to Joint/Select Committees, so that they can be carefully examined. We stand ready to extend full cooperation to parliamentary procedures and debates.”
