Amid a massive controversy over shifting the weekly holiday from Sunday to Friday in some schools in Jharkhand, a similar incident has come to the fore in Rajasthan’s Kota where parents allege that a book for Class 2 students contained community specific words. which can hinder their development.

Many parents complained that most of the non-Muslim students were being taught the book. A parent said, “Our children were born and grew up in an orthodox Brahmin family and when our seven-year-old starts demanding biryani as it is taught in books, it becomes unbearable.”

In books like Shanu, Sania, Shirin, Amir and Naseem are some of the names used for the characters of the story in the book and there are common references like Ammi (mother) and Abbu (father).

Parents complain that their children studying in a private English medium school have started using words like abbu and ammi in their homes and demanding biryani to eat.

The book named Gulmohar is published by a Hyderabad based publisher and released by CBSE Board for class 2 students. The parents complained about the book to local Bajrang Dal and VHP leaders, who in turn lodged a complaint with the state education department. Some parents alleged that the book was an attempt to “Islamize” school education.

These parents said that this book is an attempt to create a gulf between their children and Hindu culture. Actually, this said book released by CBSE has 113 pages and its cost is Rs 352.
