Washington: Robert Downey Jr. reportedly helped Armie Hammer cover his rehabilitation expenses last year.
According to People, the Avengers: Endgame star, who has been open in the past about his battle with addiction, paid for six months to Florida rehab for 35-year-old Hammer last year as the Call Me By Your Name actor Struggled with drug, alcohol and sexual issues.
A source close to both actors told the publication that 57-year-old Downey is “the pinnacle of people’s struggles in Hollywood.”
“They see Robert as the lighthouse of someone who has crossed it [addiction] And the other way around and Robert takes a lot of that respect and responsibility,” the insider said.
“He sees the strength that restraint has given him and his family life and work life and he just wants to spread this message to other people, and it is not mutually exclusive to the Army,” he says. “He’s done that to a lot of people. He’s been such a huge help to a lot of people in Hollywood that people don’t know. He’s really helped heal a lot of people,” the source said.
Hammer checked himself into a rehab facility outside Orlando on May 31 amid several months of sexual abuse allegations and has been receiving treatment ever since. The actors agreed to stay on the property as long as it takes time for them to recover.
The 34-year-old actor is in a custody battle over himself and Elizabeth Chambers’s ongoing divorce and has also been accused of multiple sexual assaults since January.
Hammer was dropped from several films including the highly anticipated ‘The Offer’, Jennifer Lopez’s action-comedy ‘Shotgun Wedding’, the thriller drama ‘Billion Dollar Spy’ and the Broadway show ‘The Minutes’. Accused them of sending out explicit messages about rape and cannibalism on social media.
