Padma Bridge: Bangladesh’s longest bridge to cut Dhaka-Kolkata travel time in half

By road the distance from the Indian border at Benapole to Dhaka will now be reduced by 70 km and travel time by 4.30 hours.

Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Saturday inaugurated the long-awaited Padma Bridge, the country’s biggest infrastructure project since independence from Pakistan in 1971. This is expected to give a major boost and connect to the country’s development index. India Directly to Dhaka, via road, rail and ports.

Project Director Mohammad Shafiqul Islam said the design and construction of the Padma Bridge is not the sole achievement of any one individual or organisation. Many people have contributed a lot. The design of Padma Bridge was submitted to AECOM of New Zealand. In 2009, design work on the bridge began in Hong Kong with Australia’s ACME International, Canada’s North West Hydraulic Consultants and Bangladeshi ACE Consultants Ltd. It is learned that British national Robin Shyam led the AECOM team for the design of the bridge.

The Petrapole-Benapole border connects the southern part of West Bengal with the southern part of Bangladesh and is the most popular way to reach Bangladesh from India by bus.
