Over 700 Myanmar nationals enter Manipur illegally, state govt seeks report from Assam Rifles

Imphal: Following the disturbing incident of over 700 Myanmar nationals illegally entering India within just two days – July 22 and July 23 – the Manipur government has sought an immediate report from the Assam Rifles. Shockingly, these persons lacked proper travel documents but managed to enter the country.

The timing of these illegal entries raises significant concerns, given the ongoing ethnic violence in Manipur due to rising tensions between the majority Meitei community and the Kukis.

Fear of smuggling of arms and ammunition

citing sources ndtv Disclose that the Manipur government has concerns that these Myanmar nationals may have brought arms and ammunition with them, but currently has no means of verifying this suspicion.

Based on a report from 28 Sector Assam Rifles Headquarters, 718 refugees from Myanmar entered Manipur through Chandel district in search of shelter due to clashes in Khampat on 23 July.

Meanwhile, Manipur Chief Secretary Vineet Joshi expressed grave concern and extreme sensitivity regarding the fresh illegal entry of 718 refugees. The state government acknowledges the potential international implications, especially in view of the ongoing law and order issues.

Manipur government demanded immediate action

To deal with the situation, the Manipur government has not only sought a comprehensive report from the Assam Rifles, but also advised them to deport 700 Myanmar nationals immediately. Additionally, the Chandel Deputy Commissioner and SP have been directed to thoroughly investigate the matter and collect biometric data from all persons involved.

Ethnic conflict continues in Manipur

Manipur is embroiled in an ethnic crisis triggered by the Tribal Solidarity March held in the state since May 3. The march led to tension between the Meitei tribe and the Kukis, as the Meitei people demanded inclusion in the Scheduled Tribes list. The situation remains tense despite Home Minister Amit Shah’s visit as the state continues to mourn the deaths of over 150 people. In addition, internet services remained suspended in the area.
