As per the data available with the University Grants Commission (UGC), a total of 2,790 complaints of ragging have been received since 2018. Sharing the details of punishment awarded to the perpetrators of alleged cases of ragging, the minister said that 620 accused have been suspended, while 43 have been suspended. Fined. Warnings have been issued to 616 offenders, while 17 have faced expulsion.

“UGC has made it mandatory for all institutions to include in their prospectus the instructions of the government regarding prohibition and consequences of ragging. A nationwide toll free 24×7 anti-ragging helpline – 1800-180-5522 – has been set up in 12 languages, which can be accessed by students in distress due to incidents of ragging.

“An anti-ragging website has been developed. The portal contains the record of registered complaints received and the status of action taken thereon. Devi said that the UGC has constituted a coordination committee and an inter-council committee for effective anti-ragging measures in higher educational institutions.
