Pakistan bowled out England for 173 in the first innings.

This was the first forfeiture match in the 129-year history of cricket.

The Pakistan cricket team is often referred to as the most entertaining side in cricket and the reasons for this may not always be cricket related. The players have been involved in several controversies in the past and one such controversy came into play when former captain Inzamam-ul-Haq forced his team out of the field, resulting in forfeiture of the match and the victory awarded to England Gaya.

After England defeated Pakistan in the first three matches, the fourth match at the Oval was a dead rubber. However, both the teams were giving their all and things were competitive for the first three innings. Pakistan had bundled out England for 173 in their first innings and then gave a mammoth reply of 504 runs in their own essay.

Kevin Pietersen and Alastair Cook rose to the occasion and looked relatively safe going south in the game. On the fourth day, the on-field umpires awarded England 5 runs without warning Pakistan as they believed the position of the ball had been changed.

Inzamam, who was the captain at the time, did not take it late and his side did not take the field in the session after tea, while England’s batsmen got out and took guard. However, nothing could pacify Pakistan as they believed that they were accused of cheating without any basis.

Even as the batsmen waited on the field, the umpire went ahead and removed the bails and for the first time in 129 years a match was awarded to a side after the opposition ‘forfeited’.

However, its impact was felt by those who were at the center of the incident. Inzamam was banned for 4 ODIs and umpire Darrell Heyer was banned from international duty by the International Cricket Council (ICC). He then threatened to take action against the ICC as well as the Pakistan Cricket Board for sacking him on the grounds of alleged racism.
