On Wild Bird Day, Sightseeing Across NCR | Gurgaon News – Times of India

Gurgaon: Twitchers in the NCR will be busy on Saturday as they document the birds. NS Day is marked as Wild Bird Day, an initiative which was undertaken by Bird Count India in 2018. During the day, bird watchers will throng forests, rural, semi-urban and urban areas for bird watching.
With binoculars in their hands and neck-hanging cameras, the birds will venture into wetlands, forests, water bodies and parks across the NCR on Saturday. It is a one day bird event celebrated across the country in which maximum number of birds are observed and listed on eBird.org/india.
The day also coincides with the global phenomenon – the October Big Day – where birders from many countries document the birds. “By participating in Wild Bird Day and uploading your lists to eBird, your observations will automatically be added to the October Big Day. Wild Bird Day (October Big Day) is part of Global Bird Weekend, a global event that aims to be the biggest bird weekend ever,” said Pankaj Gupta, a birdwatcher at Delhi Bird Society. The sighting details of the birds will be noted during the day so that later they can be documented and their habitats studied.
In February this year, the region organized Big Bird Day – a nationwide exercise. The event was first held on February 22, 2004, when 236 species of birds were recorded across the region. 253 species of birds were sighted on this day in 2020 as compared to 2019, when 247 species were sighted. In 2018, 251 species were sighted in the NCR. In 2017, a total of 268 species were sighted in NCR on Big Bird Day.
