On this day in 2005: Bangladesh secure their first Test win

The dawn of 10 January 2005 added a new chapter in the cricket journey of Bangladesh. Bengal Tigers registered their first win in the longest format of the game in the first two-Test series against Zimbabwe. With a home lead in their side, Bangladesh were in complete control of the match from the start. The hosts elected to bat first after winning the toss at the MA Aziz Stadium in Chittagong.

Openers Javed Umar and Nafees Iqbal gave their team a strong start with a 91-run partnership for the first wicket. Umar was dismissed for 33 as captain Habibul Bashar came out to bat at number three.

Bashar helped his team gain a firm grip on the match, building crucial partnerships first with Mohammad Ashraful (19) and then with Rajin Saleh. Bashar (94) and Saleh (89) both missed out on hundreds but their first innings helped their team reach a mammoth total of 488.

In reply, the visiting team suffered a collapse with half their arm in the pavilion for only 86 runs. However, captain Tatenda Taibu (92) and Elton Chigumbura (71) gave Zimbabwe some hope. His flexible innings helped the visitors reach a respectable total of 312, but Bangladesh still had a 176-run lead.

The hosts added another 204 runs before declaring their second innings, leaving Zimbabwe with a total of 381 runs to chase. A victory was out of sight for the Tatenda Taibu-led side, who were just looking to save the match. Bangladesh’s disciplined bowling, especially Inamul Haque, made the task even more difficult for the visitors.

After waiting for 4 years and over 35 Tests, Bangladesh finally registered a victory in their Test tally. The ease with which he swept Zimbabwe to the side with a 226-run win made the occasion even sweeter.
