Omicron in 18% of India’s Covid samples, 50% of cases in Delhi are local, say government sources

As per the data available till December 12, the presence of the Omicron variant of the novel coronavirus has been detected in 18 per cent of the Covid-19 samples in India.

The Union Health Ministry on Friday said that India recorded the highest single-day increase of 309 cases of the Omicron variant, taking the country’s total caseload to 1,270. It recorded 16,764 new Covid cases and 220 more fatalities. Of the 1,270 patients infected with the Omicron variant, 374 have either recovered or migrated, according to the ministry’s data updated at 8 am.

Of the 23 states and union territories that have reported cases of omicrons so far, Maharashtra has reported the highest number of 450 cases, followed by Delhi with 320, Kerala with 109 and Gujarat with 97.

Official sources have also indicated that Omicron has started replacing the delta version in the country in terms of the number of COVID-19 cases and that 80 percent of the passengers who have tested positive have this new version. However, a third of all known cases were mild symptomatic, and the rest were asymptomatic, he said.

Seeing a significant drop in COVID testing, the Center on Thursday urged 19 states/UTs to conduct “massive” testing so that positive cases can be immediately identified and transmission lines in view of the increased communicability of the Omron variant. spread can be restricted. Large spread of asymptomatic cases.

The Health Ministry has advised states and union territories to increase testing, strengthen hospital preparedness, increase the pace and coverage of vaccination campaigns and ensure strict enforcement of restrictions wherever necessary to combat the spread of infection. has given.

It also advised setting up of containment zones and buffer zones as per the existing SOPs, strengthening hospital level preparedness and ensuring optimum utilization of financial resources.

Ninety-nine percent of India’s adult population has been given the first dose of the coronavirus vaccine, and 64.40 percent have now been fully vaccinated. Highlighting the vaccination coverage in other countries with the highest number of cases and deaths, sources said the data shows that vaccination reduces hospitalization and death.
