Olympic medalist hockey stars to attend national camp on Sunday

Members of the historic Olympic bronze medal winning Indian men’s hockey team, including skipper Manpreet Singh and veteran goalkeeper PR Sreejesh, will join the ongoing national camp in Bhubaneswar on Sunday ahead of the Hero Asian Champions Trophy in Dhaka next month. The national camp has already started on November 10 without the members of the bronze medal winning team. Before leaving for the camp, Manpreet and Sreejesh will be honored with the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award here on Saturday. The other players to join the camp on Sunday are Harmanpreet Singh, Dilpreet Singh, Amit Rohidas, Surender Kumar, Neelkant Sharma, Sumit, Hardik Singh, Simranjit Singh, Gurjant Singh, Mandeep Singh, Shamsher Singh, Lalit Kumar Upadhyay and Varun Kumar. All were awarded the Arjuna Award for their historic performance in the Tokyo Olympics.

Vivek Sagar Prasad, who is also in New Delhi for the Arjuna Awards ceremony, will join the senior camp after his campaign with India’s junior team at the FIH Men’s Junior World Cup to be held in Bhubaneswar from November 24 to December 5.

The 30-member core prospective group will be camping in Bhubaneswar till December 9.

The core group also includes Akashdeep Singh, Gurinder Singh, Jarmanpreet Singh, Krishan B Pathak, Suraj Karkera, Jaskaran Singh, Nilam Sanjeep Xess, Raj Kumar Pal, Gursahibjit Singh, Dipsan Tirkey, Shilanand Lakra, Mandeep Mor, Ashis Kumar Topno and Suman Beck .

“It would be good to train the senior men’s team in Bhubaneswar as the weather here is almost similar to Dhaka. It would be great for the team to train and get used to these conditions.

“We will also play some internal matches between senior and junior core potential players which will certainly help in our preparations for the Junior World Cup,” head coach Graham Reid said in a release.

“Next year’s season will be busy with back-to-back major international tournaments for the senior team and it would be great to start the year by defending the Asian Champions Trophy.”

The Asian Champions Trophy will be held from December 14 to 22 when defending champions India, Pakistan, Korea, Japan, Malaysia and hosts Bangladesh face off for the top honours.
