Surat: A major accident could have happened had the fire brigade not acted immediately after a fire broke out in an illegal oil godown in Rajawadi of Rampura area of ​​the city. The godown was operating from a tin shed in the middle of residential buildings. There is an atmosphere of panic among the people due to coming out of the houses of the local people.
Due to the oil business on the spot, oil spread all around and the fire spread on the ground. Fire teams with six fire tenders from Mughalisara, Ghanchi Sherry And Katargam reached the spot and doused the fire.
Warehouse, Powered by Nazim Sheikh | And Salim Memon, was sealed by the fire department and both were served notices. Surat Fire and Emergency Services (SFES) has written to the District Collector’s office and the police to take action against those running the illegal oil trade.
“The whole setup was illegal and could have been a major disaster as a huge amount of oil had accumulated on the spot. We have sealed the spot and given notice,” said a fire official. The fire department has asked the Central Zone Office of the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) to take action.
“Since the oil trade was illegal, they did not approach the fire department for any kind of inspection. They did not have fire safety measures in place and the fire department has no authority to take action against such installations if they do not seek NOC,” said a fire official.
Around 40 drums of oil (200 liters each) were found on the spot. The fire spread to the ground and engulfed two motorcycles parked in a neighboring building. The outdoor units of some split ACs in the adjoining building were also damaged. The plastic pipe network also caught fire.
