Odisha para-athlete breaks world record for longest distance in wheelchair

Puri’s Kamal Kanta Nayak broke the world record for the maximum distance covered by a disabled person in a wheelchair during a 24-hour event held on Saturday and Sunday in the capital city.

“The commuting distance from Rajmahal to the master canteen is around 1.14 km which is laps for the super ultra-marathon. Kamal covered 43 kms in 4 hrs, 89 kms in 9 hrs, 118 kms in 12 hrs, 165 kms in 18 hrs, 183 kms in 20 hrs.

Earlier, Mario Trinidad of Portugal held the world record for the maximum distance covered in a wheelchair. He had covered a distance of 182.4 kilometres.

Nayak started his event yesterday at 4:30 pm to break the world record. He has set a target of covering a distance of 220 km in a wheelchair in 24 hours. In between the hero’s dinner, therapy, CIC and hydration are done.

He has covered 43 km in 4 hrs, 89 km in 9 hrs, 118 km in 12 hrs, 165 km in 18 hrs and 183 km in approx 20 hrs. Officials of various government departments and institutions were present during the programme.

The program was supported by Sports Secretary Vinil Krishna, Planning Board Deputy Chairman Sanjay Dasbarma, MLA Anant Jena, State Disability Commissioner Sulochana Das, HOD, Physiotherapy Nirtar, PP Mohanty and Hollywood actor Sabyasachi Mishra.

Puri MP Pinaki Mishra, Secretary Odisha State Wheelchair Basketball Association Durga Prasad Patnaik and Better Life Foundation spokesperson Sagarika Dubey spoke and inspired Nayak.
