The four policemen have been booked under sections 302 (murder), 323 (causing hurt), 342 (wrongful confinement), 325 (causing grievous hurt), 505 (criminal intimidation) and 34 (act done by more than one person). Case has been registered. IPC
a few days ago the mother of the deceased Prabina Mahuria had lodged a complaint with the crime branch. Prabina alleged that though she had earlier lodged a complaint against four officers at the Jaipur police station, the police hushed the investigation as Rath was heading the station at that time.
“At around 1 pm, Rath and his staff forcibly dragged my son into their jeep, brutally assaulted him in the lock-up and killed him. The police argued in its defense that my son tried to run away to avoid arrest. Police said he slipped and suffered serious head injuries after falling to the ground, leading to his death. Now, I request the crime branch to bring me justice and punish the guilty cops,” Prabina said.
It is to be noted that the Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC) on several occasions pulled up the state police for brutality and cruelty towards the suspects of the crime in their custody. Instances of police excesses have led to the suspension of some policemen in recent times.
