The officials of the institute said that the enrollment of women is increasing continuously. At least 60 women have been trained on HMV driving in the last three to four years. a joint venture between the state government and Ashok LeylandThe institute sponsors 30 days residential HMV driving training for the people of the state. The institute is functioning on 44 acres of land since March 2013.
More than 5,000 people are trained annually at the institute. The trainees are provided with food, accommodation and driving license free of cost. In addition, each trainee gets Rs 3,000 stipend or salary loss compensation after the completion of 30 days of training. Most trainees get jobs by the end of their training.
“I loved to drive. When I decided to learn driving skills, my friends and relatives attacked me, saying that driving is basically a manly job. But my family supported me. Seeing my interest, my elder sister also started learning driving with me,” said Suprabha.
Presently five women are learning driving skills at the institute. “We are getting encouragement from the authorities of the institute. They trust us.” Subhadarshini said.
The institute provides livelihood and job placement assistance to trainee drivers. About 10,400 people have been trained so far in the last eight years, while more than 1,000 people have got driver jobs. Orissa Police, Central Forces and other government departments.
