Odisha Assembly disrupted for sixth day over Mamta Meher murder case

The proceedings of the state assembly in Odisha have been disrupted for the past six days by both the ruling and opposition parties over various issues. The ruckus and ruckus continue on the obstinate attitude of both the sides. Chairman Dr. SN Patra adjourned the proceedings till 10.30 am the next day.

As soon as the proceedings of the House began, members of the opposition BJP and Congress ran with placards and banners. They raised the slogan while reiterating their demand for the removal of Dibya Shankar Mishra, Minister of State (MoS) for Home Affairs over the Mamita Meher murder case.

Wearing black colored ‘gamuchas’, BJP members rang clocks and bells as a mark of protest. Congress MLAs showed placards demanding the removal of Mishra from the Council of Ministers.

To counter the opposition, women members of the Treasury Bench sprinkled ‘Ganga Jal’ on the protesting members in the Well of the House. The Speaker adjourned the House till 4 pm and for the second time till tomorrow.

After the adjournment, members of all three parties – BJP, Congress and BJD – continued to protest outside the assembly hall and inside the premises.

BJP MLAs were seen worshiping Lord Jagannath, while Congress members protested carrying placards. The ruling BJD legislators were seen holding banners and staging a sit-in in front of the statue of Mahatma Gandhi.

“Naveen Patnaik is in deep sleep like ‘Kumbhkaran’. The numbers of ‘Dhritarashtra’ and ‘Duryodhan’ are increasing in Odisha. BJP’s deputy leader in the assembly Bishu Sethi told the media outside the house, “The chief minister has not paid attention to what is happening around him, so we are beating the clock to wake him up.”

Senior Congress member Tara Prasad Bahinipati, who on December 4 sprinkled ‘Ganga water’ and cow urine inside the assembly hall to ‘purify’ it, alleged that the ruling BJD was creating a ruckus in the House. “It is the responsibility of the Chief Minister, who is the Leader of the House, to ensure smooth functioning of the Assembly. However, it is shameful that members of the ruling party are troubling the House, Bahinipati said.

On the other hand, BJD MLA Pratap Deb alleged that the opposition parties are playing drama for their political gains in view of the upcoming panchayat and urban body elections. “On one hand you (opposition) are giving an adjournment motion and on the other you are not ready to discuss this issue,” he said. We condemn such acts of opposition members,” Deb said.

People have elected members to the assembly to discuss several issues, including price rise, shortage of fertilizers and the problems farmers are facing due to the recent heavy rains. However, the opposition members do not want the House to run and discuss these issues.

The Speaker called an all-party meeting which ended inconclusive.
