Veteran Odia actress Jharna Das passed away at the age of 77 on Friday, December 2. Reportedly, Das has been suffering from old age ailments for a long time.
Soon after the news of Jharna Das’ death broke out, President Draupadi Murmu took to Twitter and paid tributes to the veteran actress. Murmu tweeted, “He will always be remembered for his outstanding contribution to the Odia film industry. Meanwhile, Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik also took to Twitter to express his grief over the demise of the actress. He also announced that the last rites of the veteran actress would be performed with full state honours. “His impressive performances on stage and in film will always be remembered. May his soul rest in peace and my condolences to the bereaved family,” Patnaik said in a statement quoted by India TV.
Jharna Das started her acting career in the 60s and acted in several films, including Shree Jagannath, Nari, Adinamegha, Hisabbanikas, Pujaphula, Amadabata, Actress, Maljanha and Heera Naila. Apart from working in films, the actress also worked in many television shows and plays.
