ODI World Cup Star To Miss T20 World Cup 2024: Jay Shah

BCCI Secretary Jay Shah has announced that Indian pacer Mohammed Shami is anticipated to return to international cricket during India’s Test series against Bangladesh in September 2024. The ODI World Cup star’s tentative return means that Shami might be missing out on the T20 World Cup 2024 too.

Shami has been absent from the national team since India’s loss in the 2023 ODI World Cup Final to Australia, owing to an Achilles Tendon injury that necessitated surgery on February 26, 2024. He was previously confirmed to miss the entire IPL 2024 season and, as per Jay Shah’s statement, he will also be sidelined for the quadrennial event beginning in June.

“Shami surgery is done, he is back in India. Shami’s return is likely for the home series against Bangladesh,” Jay Shah told PTI.

Following his outstanding performance in the 2023 World Cup, where he emerged as the top wicket-taker with 24 wickets, Shami has been undergoing rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy. Speaking to PTI about recent injury setbacks in the Indian cricket team, Jay Shah revealed that Shami is expected to regain fitness in time for India’s matches against Bangladesh, comprising two Tests and three T20Is, commencing in September.

Shami’s injury had been persistent prior to the ODI World Cup, with the player disclosing that he played throughout the tournament with pain-relieving injections. Since his surgery, he has been deemed unfit to represent his IPL 2024 franchise, Gujarat Titans. However, his absence from India’s 2024 T20 World Cup campaign has stirred curiosity within the cricket community.
