Australian star batsman Steve Smith was trapped in an elevator at a hotel in Melbourne on Thursday and was forced to spend an hour there, with teammate Marnus Labuschagne’s efforts to save him live-streamed. The batting mainstay was providing live updates of his ordeal on Instagram.

While trying to open the elevator door with the help of a rod, Labuschagne also gave Smith some chocolates as he waited for technicians to help him at the hotel. “I’m on my destination, I’m living on this level but the doors won’t open,” Smith said in her first Instagram story.

“Apparently out of service there. I’ve tried to open the door; I’ve opened this side, Marnus (Labuschagne) on the other side is trying to open it, but to no avail.” It wasn’t evening Which I had planned, let’s be honest.” When a technician finally managed to open the door, Smith came out to a thunderous applause from his Australian teammates.

“Safely back in the room. Finally, off the elevator. That was definitely an experience. 55 minutes I’ll probably never come back,” he said. Smith led Australia to victory in Adelaide over England, which has lost the Ashes after three consecutive losses. Smith took over as captain for the first time since the ball-tampering scandal. In 2018 Pat Cummins was dismissed after being identified as a close contact of a COVID-19 case.

Cummins bounced back and propelled Australia to wrap up the series with a thumping innings and a 14-run victory in the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne.
