‘No evidence of data leak’: WhatsApp denies data breach of 500 million users

WhatsApp Data Breach: Instant messaging app WhatsApp today denied any data leak from its servers. WhatsApp said that the report of the data leak is based on unverified screenshots. This claim by WhatsApp comes after multiple platforms reported that the data of around 500 million WhatsApp users has allegedly been leaked and could be up for sale. Responding to this, a WhatsApp spokesperson said, “The claim written on CyberNews is based on baseless screenshots. There is no evidence of ‘data leak’ from WhatsApp.”

Earlier, reports suggested that WhatsApp, which is considered to be a secure platform due to its end-to-end encryption feature, allegedly leaked a data that compromised around 500 million users.

Mashable India, a digital media platform, has reported that according to a recent allegation by CyberNews, someone managed to hack WhatsApp and get hold of personal information of around 500 million users, which is now reportedly up for sale. Is.

Reportedly, an actor advertised on a hacker site the sale of personal information of over 487 million WhatsApp users, including their cell numbers. The list says the user data includes 32 million US users and comes from 84 other countries, including Egypt, Italy, Saudi Arabia, France and Turkey.

Stolen phone numbers can be used for impersonation, phishing, and other fraudulent activities. WhatsApp’s parent company Meta has not yet responded to this update.

According to Mashable India, the WhatsApp user database from the US is being sold for US$7,000, which is much higher than the rates for user data from the UK and Germany, which cost US$2,500 and US$2,000 respectively.
