No definitive agreement on commercial supply of modern jabs to India, says Cipla after DCGI nod

New Delhi: Hours after India’s drug regulator DCGI reported that Mumbai-based Cipla was allowed to import Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine for emergency use restricted to the country, the pharma giant said that there is no commercial supply yet between Cipla and Moderna There has been no definitive agreement on coronavirus jabs.

Clarifying the details, Cipla said it is supporting Moderna with regulatory approval and import of COVID-19 vaccines to be donated to India and there is no agreement on commercial supply at this stage.

After DCGI’s approval, Moderna’s vaccine will be the fourth COVID-19 jab to be available in India after Covishield, Covaxin and Sputnik V.

Cipla told news agency IANS in a statement, “Cipla Limited is supporting Moderna, Inc. with regulatory approval and import of vaccines to be donated to India. At this stage, there is no definitive agreement on commercial supply. “

Cipla’s statement came after Moderna, which announced earlier in the day that the Indian government had issued a certificate of registration and permission to import Covid jabs.

“I want to thank the Indian government for this authorization, which is an important step in the global fight against the pandemic,” said Moderna’s chief executive officer, Stephen Bansel.

Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine is authorized pursuant to a certificate of registration and permission to import the COVID jab in adults 18 years of age and older for restricted use in emergency situations in India.

Moderna has received emergency use authorizations for its COVID-19 vaccine from health agencies in more than 50 countries and an Emergency Use List (EUL) from the World Health Organization (WHO).

Meanwhile, Dr VK Paul, Member (Health) NITI Aayog said that the new permission for restricted emergency use potentially opens up a clear possibility of the vaccine being imported into India in the near future.
