Replying to a question in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday, Union Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai said, “The government has decided as a policy that the population will not be counted on the basis of caste other than SC and ST in the census.”
As per the provisions of the Constitution, the Lok Sabha and the Legislative Assemblies are reserved for the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes in proportion to their population, as far as may be.
In the Census, the castes and tribes that have been specifically notified are: scheduled caste And the Scheduled Tribes are counted in accordance with the Constitution (Scheduled Castes) Order, 1950 and the Constitution (Scheduled Tribes) Order, 1950 (as amended from time to time).
“We have already passed a resolution in the assembly in favor of caste-based census in 2019 and 2020. We have also sent it to the central government. We have been raising the issue since 1990. Caste-based census at least once. There should be development and welfare of people other than SCs and STs. The central government should consider this,” Kumar said.
