Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari On Tuesday, it appealed to all private vehicle manufacturers to make it mandatory to provide minimum ‘six airbags’ across all variants and segments of the vehicle in the interest of passenger safety.

The Union Minister also stressed on the need for early launch of ‘Flex-Fuel Vehicles’ within a year. In technical parlance, FFVs are capable of running on 100 percent ethanol and gasoline.

Gadkari on Tuesday called for a meeting with a delegation of CEOs of Society of India Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), which included private, commercial and two-wheeler manufacturers.

“The delegation presented an update of the position of the auto industry and requested for deferment of emission-based regulations such as ‘OBD’ rules for two-wheelers such as ‘BS-VI Phase 2’, ‘CAFE Phase 2’.” The ministry said in a statement.

“Gadkari emphasized the need for a quick roll-out of flex-fuel vehicles (FFVs) capable of running on 100 per cent ethanol and gasoline in the Indian auto market within a year, as compared to the successful technologies available in Brazil and the US.”

“Siam’s requests are currently being considered and a follow-up meeting may be held within a fortnight.”
