The pair of Nasum, Shakib and Mahedi defeated Australia 11-3 in the third over.

Left-arm spinner Nasum Ahmed claimed a career-best 4-19 as Bangladesh moderated 131-7 and beat Australia by 23 runs in their first of five Twenty20s on Tuesday.

Australia were bowled out for 108 in 20 overs, the lowest score against Bangladesh in the shortest format.

left arm fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman and Shorful Islam took two wickets each to complement Nasum and secured Bangladesh’s first of five matches against Australia.

Australia had to pay the price for failing to deal with the spinners.

Shakib Al HasanMahedi Hasan, another left-arm spinner and off-spinner, also played his part, taking a wicket each.

Mitchell Marsh, who scored three half-centuries in five matches against West Indies, was the only Australian to maintain any resistance. He scored 45 runs before being dismissed for the sixth man.

The pair of Nasum, Shakib and Mahedi defeated Australia 11-3 in the third over.

Mahdi got out on the first ball Alex Carey, Nasum stumped Josh Philippe for 9, and Shakib accounted for Moises Henriques before Marsh departed.

With Shakib and Mahedi depriving Australia of the flow of runs, Nasum ripped the middle order into a gem of spin bowling.

Marsh kept the visitors’ expectations alive with calculative aggression and his confidence increased after hitting Shakib for a six. Marsh went for a slog-sweep in Nasum’s last over, and Australia’s chances effectively went with him.

Coming to bat first for Bangladesh, Shakib made 36 off 33 balls and opener Mohammad Naeem made 30 off 29 balls, which included two fours and as many sixes. Afif Hossain added 23 not out off 16.

Naeem hit Australia’s fast bowler Mitchell Starc for a six over midwicket on the second ball of the innings.

Starc’s new ball partner Josh Hazlewood took the wicket Soumya Sarkar at 2, and Naeem is removed by the legspinner adam zampa.

Shakib and Captain Mahmudullah: Played carefully but failed to spin the scoreboard fast enough.

Hazlewood (3-24) broke the partnership when Mahmudullah was dismissed for 20 with a knuckle ball.

Hazlewood also took the crucial wicket of Shakib when he was ready to speed up the scoreboard.

Starc got some tailenders but Afif Hossain caught one end to help the team cross 130.

The second match is on Wednesday.
