SECUNDERABAD: A new rule barring civilians from walking near the Rashtrapati Nilayam at Bolarum in Secunderabad Cantonment has irked nearly 100 to 150 daily walkers of adjacent colonies such as Mallareddy Nagar, Ayodhya Nagar, Saraswathi Nagar Colony, Venkateswara Colony and Lothukunta.
“No trespassing and walkers are not allowed beyond this point,” reads the signboard put up by Rashtrapati Nilayam authorities. The signboard has been put up on the road that leads to Lothukunta, Telangana Andhra Sub Area (TASA) headquarters, RSI Club, Eagle Chowk, Cavalry Barracks, Ammuguda and Trishul Line.
The order has left civilians fuming.
“All the roads near defense establishments in Secunderabad Cantonment are garbage-free and pollution-free and we use this road just to get some fresh air. The new rule is unacceptable,” said V Raja Reddy, a resident of Mallareddy Nagar.
Recently, civilians of nearly 10 residential colonies in Yapral and Balaji Nagar at Bolarum were restricted from walking near defense establishments in Secunderabad cantonment by the Local Military Authority (LMA). This is the second such instance in a span of three weeks of civilians being barred from using a road in Secunderabad Cantonment.
“The road near TASA headquarters, RP NilayamRSI Club and Eagle Chowk has lots of greenery and many morning walkers prefer to use this road for this sole reason,” said B Vamshidhar, a resident of Mallareddy Nagar and a regular walker.
S Jyothirmai, a resident of Saraswathi Nagar, said, “We prefer the clean roads for our morning walks. Due to lack of parks in residential colonies and the poor maintenance at existing parks, we had no option but to use the road. The SCB was supposed to build some parks in residential colonies but we still do not have any parks.”
Stating that RP Nilayam authorities restrict civilians from using the road for just 15 to 20 days a year when the President of India is in town and stays at RP Nilayam, a few senior citizens questioned the rationale behind being denied access to the road during the remaining days.
